“Battle of the Books” is a book-based trivia tournament for youth in grades 4-6. Interested students receive a list of 20 books each January to prepare for the honored title of Comprehension Champions. The team that demonstrates the most knowledge about the content of these books becomes that year’s champions. Libraries from St Lawrence, Jefferson, Lewis and Oswego Counties are each eligible to send one team comprised of four students to compete at the Regional Battle.
The 2018 Regional Battle, facilitated by experts from the North Country Library System and many of its member libraries, was held on Saturday, May 5, at St. James School in Gouverneur.
35 libraries sent teams to the Regional Battle. The all-day double-elimination competition was fierce! Each of the 140 participating students were impressively well-read and prepared. Morristown Public Library’s “Grimoires”, Ivan Kring, Regan Butler, Isaac Begel and Joey Kring, demonstrated utmost understanding of this year’s thoughtfully chosen award-winning books, placing First and taking the Gold Medal in the 2018 competition. Each member of the team received a personal gold medallion commemorating their achievement and also has the privilege of displaying the 18-inch Gold Cup in their Public Library for the year. Morristown is so proud!
Canton Free Library came in Second Place, and Ogdensburg Public Library placed Third.
“Battle of the Books” is a wonderful educational program. Contact your local library if you are interested in the 2019 competition.
